Macy’s Spring Flower Show is Out of This World!

Journey to Paradisios is now at Macy’s Herald Square for the 45th Annual Macy’s Flower Show®. Macy’s annual floral spectacular will “bloom” through Sunday, April 7th.

Hurry!

The annual Flower Show arrives at just the right moment -- just when we need a bolt of cheer that only fresh, colorful flowers can deliver. Especially on rather grey or rainy spring days, Macy’s Journey to Paradisios transports you into a multi-dimensional world of space, adventure and discovery through flora and eccentrically, curiously, landscaped gardens that celebrate the wonder and mystery of the (wink, wink) “planet Paradisios.”

While few would argue that plants and their flowers are other-worldly - taking us to places in our dreams and discoveries beyond - The Macy’s Flower Show team has created a very special place and is telling a story - with the plants!
This is my favorite and recommended way to enjoy plants.  I lead my garden talks with the advantage that "All great gardens tell a story."

According to Macy’s, the “Journey To Paradisios” story theme brings to life the cosmic tale of Space Flight Director Lucy Ryder and her discovery of the planet Paradisios – a pristine exoplanet, untouched by human technology and filled with resplendent plant life.

Ahhh…

“Ryder and R.H. Macy IV, (a pilot-turned-cosmonaut, and the great-great-great grandson of Macy’s founder) set out on the adventure of a lifetime as they discover the planet’s extraterrestrial beings and fantastic flora.”

Why the Space-inspired theme, you may ask?

I’m praying on a praying mantis (!) that it’s because we’re re-dedicating ourselves to science. And in fact, that’s kinda the reason!

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the first lunar landing! We salute our brave astronauts...
What a spectacular adventure and journey.

While most, if not all of us, will never experience the grandeur of being in space, nor being on the moon, we can certainly be “all-in” on the ever-exciting plant adventures.

Whether it’s botanical art, gardening, plant-inspired jewelry, horticultural therapy, garden design, plant exploration, horticulture, edible gardens, medicinal gardens, plants-as-fabric, (put your plants on!), garden-to-glass, plants-are-fragrance, and whew - so much more -- get to know and embrace the world of plants!

On Sunday, March 24th, Macy’s Herald Square launched its 45th annual two-week long Flower Show, Journey To Paradisios, celebrating the arrival of spring with “discovery, color, and wonder.”

I was able to scoot uptown for a preview tour last week. It’s a delightful presentation! And free! I highly recommend that you and your family get to the landmark retailer and treat yourselves to the Flower Show. You deserve this. You made it through the winter. Now mark the seasonal splendor of the floral compositions.

The floral designs start on the streetscapes and in the store’s captivating display windows.

And the show continues on the first floor as well as the mezzanine - where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the displays and use the kaleidoscope/telescope. Kids will love the perch and the experience.

While I was up in a cloud-kissed garden view - I saw the Starbucks cafe so naturally, I thought I’d order a cup of Joe to accompany my Flower Show tour and soon to be shopping (Ok, all those spring flowers tempted me to spring ahead with a seasonal wardrobe update…)
I just loved these old-world wood escalators!  So classy
Up in the cloud-kissed mezzanine, rather than my usual coffee, I indulged in a frothy Green matcha drink to keep me in the green, garden spirit.

Pretty and tasty.

You too can “Spring Fling” shop! I found a perfect floral, Tommy Hilfiger dress to wear at my “Spring into Gardening” talk at the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society. The dress looks like a bouquet -- plus the belt matched my kitten heel Italian mule shoes like they were a true romantic couple.
A Fast-Forward, post Spring Into Gardening talk celebration with dear friend Roberta Hunter. I'm also showing my Macy Fashion!
More about my “Spring Into Gardening” talk in the next Garden Glamour post. But now - Back to the Flower business, at hand!

There a few cute spots where Macy’s has created selfie photo stops on the tour:

My cosmic tour guide, Miriam!

Kids love this giant Venus Fly Trap creation where they can sit inside!

Flowers Galore

The spectacular floral designs are comprised of more than 5,000 types of plants, trees, and flowers that transported visitors into a mufti-dimensional world of space and adventure through flora and eccentrically landscaped gardens blasting off into the wonder and mystery of the planet Paradisios, said Macy’s.

You walk through “several intergalactic creations featuring a spaceship launching into outer space through the roof into a star-filled night sky and colorful inhabitants, floating cities, alien technology, and whimsical plant life of planet Paradisios.”

Every display is designed with characters that help tell the story. There are brochures for your self guided tour.

along with a mix of blossoms and blooms - and some curious-looking real plants.

And some compositions feature cosmic topiaries:

And then there’s just plain fun vignettes brimming with “space-themed products” that amplify the story:

The fantasy continues; more in the realm of true floral style with the seven fashion pods throughout the main floor featuring looks designed by Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) students who were challenged to create original designs inspired by the Journey to Paradisios theme.

As I noted earlier, plants are a major source of our textiles, so it’s a delightful, blooming surprise that Macy’s and FIT collaboration for the first time.

The floral, fashion-forward displays are an exciting celebration. Each of the seven featured fashion pods has the look displayed on a mannequin, and a floral design composition adorning its base. I salute the Lunar and Comet and Shining Star studded compositions that all include a fragrance “partner!” Plants are fragrance… Heavenly.

Featured fragrances from Yves St. Laurent, Thierry Mugler, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Giorgio Armani, Tiffany & Co, and Dolce & Gabanna.

One fashion pod is better than the next. Kudos to all the selected fashion designers.

OK, maybe I liked this petal fashion one, best.

Or maybe - I really liked this blossom dress best…

Oh, but who can resist pink - especially when it’s almost cherry blossom time?

I did love this Zero Gravity frothy fantasy.

Enjoy the Macy’s Annual Rite of Spring. Honor and enjoy our other-worldly plants…

The two-week show is in full bloom and closes on Sunday, April 7th.
